Topic: The Patience of Love that leads to service
Text: Gen 29:18, 20
"Jacob was in love with Rachel and said, "I'll work for you seven years in return for your younger daughter Rachel. So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her"
Love is really patient. We labour for whatever we love without bothering over it's time duration. Jacob, like a student who gained admission into a course, not really his choice, patiently completed his course and graduated with Bachelor's Degree and enrolled back for the course of his choice. What a big lesson of focusing on our choice until we get there! Life is full of challenges but our love for a project and our determination to get it achieved helps to absorb every shock and endure every obstacle to achieve our dreams. But we must make sure it's not an evil project to avoid wasting our time for nothing good.
1. Love is patient. Jacobs love for Rachel caused him seven years of service to Laban Rachel's father. But the seven years "seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her" Gen 29:20. We can see Paul's view that love " always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" 1Cor 13:7. In love "a Winner never quits and a Quiter never wins". Love is the propelling force between the time of the dream and the time of achieving the dream. Whatever you love, wait patiently for it, you will get it!
2. Love compels us to fulfill our promises. Jacob's promise to his uncle father-in-law was "I'll serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel" Gen 29:20. He never thought of cutting covers, no deception, no immoral dealings. This is because it was culturally unacceptable. The church seems to be loosing ground in chastity of marriage. He gently asked his in-law, "Give me my wife. My time is completed, and I want to make love to her" Gen 29:21. He kept his promise. Waited for seven years, serving in hope. May God reward our patience and commitment
3. Those who cheat us because we love God and are committed to his course are cheating themselves. Laban succeeded at tricking Jacob and denied him his choice of Rachel, he didn't know he was dealing with a man with grace of God. God said him, "Behold, I am With you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you" Gen 28:15. God latter said to Laban "Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad" Gen 31:24. He finally confessed to Jacob, ,"It is in my power to do you harm. But the God of your father spoke to me last night, saying, " Be careful not to say anything to Jacob, either good or bad". Gen 31:29. Love is patience and when we run through it and we seem to be maneuvered, God fights for us.
Prayer: Oh LORD my Father, consider you love for you and rescue me from the ember fangs of the cobra, my time shall not be wasted and my goal shall never be thwarted in Jesus name.
