Theme: Dealing with the Sounding Brass
Topic: Polygamy, a product of search for True Love
Text: Gen 29:30
"Jacob made love to Rachel also, and his love for Rachel was greater than his love for Leah. And he worked for Lebanon for another seven years"
Polygamy was never part of God's agenda for marriage but originated from man's serve for True Love. Jacob had already loved Rachel seven years ago before making love with her now. The True Love which was established before declaring his intention to Laban had occupied every space in his heart and flowed throughout his bones and marrows. Giving him Leah instead of Rachel was like poisoning his heart. To remove the toxin, he desires to make love with Rachel, the True Love of his soul. This is the source of "Comparative Love" between Rachel and Leah. So what God "saw that Leah was hated" Gen 29:31(KJV), could be described as "Jacob despised" Leah(Amp). He had Leah and was still looking for True Love. When we are selfishly denied what we love, this may lead to having and still searching for.
1. Polygamy is having more than one wife. So a polygamist is a man who marries more than one wife. Jesus told his audience that "at the beginning the creator "made them male and female" Matt 19:4. It was one man to marry one woman to become one flesh(Matt 19:5). The first known Biblical polygamist "Lamech" who married two women Adah and Zillah Gen 4:19 gave no reason for his action. This could also be traced to searching for true love.
2. It's likely that no reasonable man enters into this act by personal choice but through imposition by another man, by religion, by divine nature - barrenness, mistake in marriage, sexual lust, greed, deception, tricks or lust of eyes, pride of life which comes from the world 1John 2:16. We can avoid this by accepting Jesus as Lord
3. True Love is always "greater than" in comparison with another love. Jacob's love for Rachel "was greater than his love for Leah". Gen 29:30. This should be the standard for every marriage which keeps the eyes of men who are married off from other women, no matter the beauty, wealth, industry, or popularity of other women. This is a principle that judges immoral living. "Beauty is to the Beholder". Let's be satisfied with what choice we had already made in choosing a life partner either man or woman. We should also avoid leading people into "Comparative Love" that leads into Polygamy. Let people Marry the partner of their choice. This is the joy of marriage.
Prayer: Oh LORD my Maker, help me to remain in my cistern and be satisfied with its water; deliver me from distractors who mislead me into Comparative Love with my partner. I shall remain a True Lover no matter the distraction in
