Theme: Dealing with the Sounding Brass

Topic: Love is the Summary of the Law

Text: Rom 13:9

"The commandments, " You shall not commit adultery", " You shall not murder", " You shall not steal", " You shall not cover" and whatever other commandments there may be, are summed up in this one command, " Love your neighbour as yourself".

Love is not only an endless debt, it's also the summary of all the Old Testament commandments. Though the LAW and LOVE of God run through out the Old and New Testaments, LAW of God is predominant in Old Testament and offenders received instant judgement. The New Testament or new covenant brought through Jesus offers God's Love in it's fullness with his grace that speaks for the Love. Though judgement of our sins may no longer be instant, Love of God in our heart must take it's cause to justify us for the future coming judgement of the righteous God who has all our records.

1. We are not in time of law but in time of greater law. Jesus came to inform us that there are more than ten commandments "Do not think I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them" Matt 5:17. It's no longer " murder" but " angry" (Matt 5:21-22); no longer "adultery" or "fornication" but "Lust" (Matt 5:27-28) etc. Love really is an endless debt we must pay to be free from the power of commandment.

2. God is never the God of commandment but the God of Love. He has covenant of love" Deut 7:7,12; God is love 1John 4:16. We must have love to speak God's language. It took God's love to secure salvation for mankind and therefore we must love the LORD our God with all our heart and might and love our neighbours as ourselves before we can be acceptable. Matt 22:37-40. This is the Greatest Commandment!

3. The death and resurrection of Christ shall not be of benefit to those who neglect the Love of God which is Jesus Christ, "How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? Heb 10:29. Love of God that manifested in the flesh, shed his blood for our sins. We must respond in love to be counted worthy of its benefit

Prayer: Oh LORD my God, I respond to the gift of your love to mankind, I offer my life wholely and unreservedly, guide me jealously never to make light of this gift that I shall be counted worthy of your eternal blessing in Jesus name.
