Theme: Dealing with the Sounding Brass
Topic: The Appointed Time
Text: Psalm 102: 13
"You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to show mercy to her: the appointed time has come"
Zion as a symbol of the church has a time it is rejected and cast away and a time it is accepted and drawn closer to enjoy God's unconditional love. Among all the times of life, the preacher mentions "a time to embrace and a time to refrain", "time to search and a time to give up., a time to keep and a time to throw away", " a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time to war and a time for peace" Ecl 3:5b - 8. In the above Psalm, the afflicted man pours out his lamentation to God and reminds him that this is the set time to remember his church (Zion). If God does remember his church, the church is also called upon to remember herself and her members. The church should not hate herself, plan evil against herself, poison herself and inflict injuries on herself and still expect God to show her mercy and loving kindness.
1. God's unconditional love is demonstrated through his mercy and loving kindness. He shows his gentle, heart-melted compassionate care. He therefore "does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities" Psalm 103:10. He remembers our weakness (frailty) though he never ever acquits the guilt at the end of his mercy.
2. God's unconditional love is demonstrated through teaching and preaching, "I also sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them" Here 7:25. This to avoid ignorant since knowledge is power. God said "obey my voice that I will be your God and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you" Jere 7:23 When God is sending ministers to warn his people, he is showing his love and mercy to them. This is an attention to Zions travail!
3. God's love and mercy is constance but time to show it varies. "For he said to Moses, " I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and will have compassion on whom I will have compassion" Rom 9:15. We should not play on God's time to show mercy and love. Those who miss their own opportunity, have missed it. May we never miss our own time of God's visitation.
Prayer: Thank you my God for calling my attention to the fact that there is time to embrace your love and mercy. Help me never to make jest of this rare opportunity. I shall be among those who know their time and manage it well in Jesus name.
